One of the biggest surprise box office hits of 2025 came at the end of the year with The Housemaid. The erotic thriller stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried alongside 1923 veteran Brandon Sklenar, and it’s based on the book of the same name by Freida McFadden. The Housemaid is finally winding down a successful run in theaters after grossing over $300 million at the box office against a $35 million budget, and the film is set to enter a new stage of its life cycle. Last week, Collider announced it was coming to VOD with some exclusive behind-the-scenes images, and now the film is available to rent or purchase around the world on platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV.

At the time of writing, The Housemaid is taking over the VOD charts in America. The film is currently in the top 10 in more than 15 countries around the world — fans just can’t get enough of Sydney Sweeney’s risqué thriller. Streaming information for The Housemaid has not yet been announced, and it likely won’t be made available until the film cools off on VOD. The film follows a struggling young woman who is granted a chance at a fresh start when she begins a new job as a maid for a wealthy couple. However, she soon finds herself in a dangerous love triangle full of secrets and deceit.

The Housemaid was off to a good start when author Freida McFadden shared a positive review of the film in the weeks leading up to release. It then earned solid scores of 74% from critics and 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, which has certainly helped word-of-mouth over the last few weeks as more fans brave the cold winter weather to see the film on the big screen.

When Does ‘The Housemaid 2’ Come Out?

Less than a month after The Housemaid hit theaters, Lionsgate announced it was moving forward with a sequel to the film, tentatively titled The Housemaid’s Secret. Only Sydney Sweeney is expected back in the film, but it does not yet have an official release date. Box office hits aren’t easy to come by these days, so Lionsgate will likely look to capitalize on The Housemaid’s success and prioritize its sequel. It could be released as soon as next year.
