Evelyn Plummer grows concerned (Picture: ITV)
Poor Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) isn’t likely to have a very Merry Christmas.
The victim of a horrifying hit-and-run, Coronation Street’s beloved mechanic was left temporarily paralysed with life-changing spinal injuries after being mowed down by Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) and Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey), who swerved their stolen car to avoid Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin).
Like a lot of terrible things in Weatherfield, you can lay the blame squarely at the feet of Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), who convinced the teens to steal the car and later torched it to hide the evidence.
Confined to a wheelchair, Tyrone’s been struggling to come to terms with his new life and what it means for his loved ones.

His condition has put serious strain on his marriage to Fiz (Jenny McAlpine), who’s become her husband’s carer and tried to help him cope with the realities of his mobility issues whilst juggling her job at the factory with raising their two daughters, Hope (Isabelle Flanagan) and Ruby (Billie Naylor).
After trashing a sewing machine at work and lying about rushing off to meet her mum Cilla, it soon became clear that Fiz was not coping well. And with Tyrone growing frustrated with physiotherapy, it’s clear that he is in dire needs of some extra support.

Of all the people you’d go to for comfort and support, Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) may not seem like an obvious choice.
Tyrone’s acid-tongued battleaxe of a grandmother is more likely to dole out a soul-crushing putdown than a friendly pat on the back.

So when a downbeat Tyrone asserts that he’s going to skip his physio session, Evelyn quickly deduces that he’s scared, because today was supposed to be a first attempt at walking.
Stepping in to the breech, Evelyn offers to mind the kids so they can spend New Year’s Eve in the pub, Fiz and Tyrone are delighted to have a night off. As Tyrone hobbles in on his crutches, everyone cheers.
